Up and up

Yesterday I mentioned that my Doctor had given me the okay to start reducing my pain medication and I predicted that it would not be a pain free exercise. Turns out I was correct. Cold turkey may not have been the best idea. By yesterday afternoon I was in a fair bit of discomfort so today I started the medication again, just on a reduced dose. I will reduce again at the end of the week and see how it is.

Not all bad though, as I also mentioned yesterday, one upside to cutting out the medication briefly is that it does give you a good insight into just how beat up your body is. When you get the full brunt of your injury without the mask of pain medication it does make you cut your body some slack. Perhaps take things a little bit easier.

Not too easy though.

Today I have actually had a reasonable day of training. The morning started off with a session on the Kickr. 70 minutes at reasonable intensity. Not quite back to normal, but not far off. Then this afternoon it was time for some stair climbing.

I was chatting to Daryl yesterday about things I can do to work on running fitness that don't actually involve running and he suggested walking hills and stairs. As luck would have it I happen to work near a very large set of stairs, 242 steps to be exact, called Jacob's Ladder, so I thought I would give it a try. I wasn't sure how the session would go or how intense it would end up, but I figured it would give me a higher intensity session that simply walking. Turns out I was correct. Really the session ended up equivalent to a fairly intense running interval session, but without the upper body strain. I will see how I pull up in the morning, but I think I managed to protect the shoulder from any undue jolts or movement. I am not sure that the legs will pull up so well though. I haven't done that sort of strength workout for a while and I suspect I may be a little sore in the morning.

All I have to do now is figure out a swimming equivalent.

Feels good to be getting back into the swing of things though.
