Warm fuzzies

Claremont pool has great warm showers. During winter, the highlight of my swimming morning will be that few minutes where you finish the swim and jump into the shower. Toasty.

Sometimes though, the warm shower is not so welcome.

This morning was one of those mornings.

As I may have mentioned once or twice yesterday, Perth is hot right now. 36 degrees today to follow up on the 39 that graced us yesterday. It is the sort of weather where it is just plain hot. The sort of weather where a post swim warm shower isn't exactly welcome.

Beyond the warm shower, the swim session this morning went pretty well. The water in the pool wasn't hot this week, which was an issue last Wednesday, so that was a bonus. The session was a strange mix of intensity and cruising which always keeps it interesting. It makes the session a delicate balancing act of going fast enough to make the times, but not so fast that you blow up. We got it pretty right this time around I think, although we faded a bit in the last 500m effort. Still it was a good session. Leading into Mandurah last year, swimming was feeling great, sessions were changed from being an impossible to being a tough challenge, but doable. This change brought with it the chance to chase sessions, rather than just 'hold on'. That feeling has come back over the last couple of weeks and I am loving it.

Going back to yesterday, I got through my afternoon run session. It ended up being fairly warm, but not unbearable. The run itself went very well. The session was a number of high intensity intervals with long recoveries in between. Sort of a trade, you get lots of rest, but when you are going, you are going hard. In a way it was a follow up to the high intensity session I did last Friday, with less intervals and more rest. The session last Friday went well, but with the extra rest yesterday I feel this latest session was better. Certainly the times were quicker. It has been a long time since my run felt like it was near where I wanted it to be. I am not there yet, but over the past week or so I have felt closer than I have for a while.

On to the trainer tonight. Hopefully the weather has cooled down a bit by then.
