Well there you go, race is done and dusted. Pretty good morning out in the end.
In the wash up it has been a rather darn good weekend. Spot on to plan. Getting down to Busselton and back was painless, accommodation and food worked a charm and the race went off without a hitch. Colour me satisfied. Tired, but satisfied.
With regard to the race I was hoping to survive the swim and have some fun and I did both of those things. A distant second priority was to do an okay time and I actually manged to do that too, so all around thumbs up I think.
My time in the end was 52 minutes and 10 seconds, which gives me an average of 1:26/100m. Going to say I am rather chuffed with that, particularly given I have only been swimming once a week. Kind of makes me tempted to perhaps even swim twice a week again.
The race conditions were about as perfect as you can ask for from Busso. Strongish southerly winds were blowing straight offshore which meant that the water was flat for two thirds of the way along the jetty. By the last part of the jetty we were out of the lee of the land and there was a proper bit of wind chop, but we probably only had to deal with that for a few hundred metres to the end of the jetty and a few hundred metres back towards shore and then we started to get shelter from the land again. I won't lie, those few hundred metres swimming back into chop from the end of the jetty weren't super fun, but it isn't too bad when you know the water will be getting flatter again soon. About the only blemish on the day was that the right lens of my goggles kept leaking which meant I had to empty them a few times mid stroke, but that wan't too big a hassle, more annoying than anything.
Pace and intensity wise the event the day was all pretty manageable. I had no real intention of pushing hard, just swimming solid, which is exactly how it went. I was sure that if I pushed hard then the last part of the race would be rather uncomfortable so I just kept it solid and steady. As a result the race never really got hard, just enjoyable, which is exactly what I wanted.
Successful day all around. Might even look at doing a few more Open Water Series event next season.
On a different topic, I am off for work again tomorrow, back on Wednesday. That means the blog will be on a short break probably until Thursday. I should be back and typing by then though.
