I got my holiday wish today, I got in a day where I was able to do a whole bunch of exercise. Two decent sessions. Noice.
Annoyingly my long awaited day of training wasn't all that great. The session this morning was alight, but this afternoon I was just plain tired and so the quality was a bit lacking. The extra training combined with the big Christmas day was just a bit much I suspect. I am not all that upset about that though.
The unfortunate reality of exercise is that not every session goes well. Sometimes there is fatigue from other sessions, or the conditions aren't great, or you haven't slept well or any one of a bunch of other reasons. You can't knock every session out of the park.
When the training isn't going great though the important thing is that the training still happens. As I often speak about on this blog, the long term improvements in sport come from consistent application of intelligent training. If you are only training when you are feeling great then you will be missing out on a lot of that consistency and the gains that come with it. While my session this afternoon wasn't awesome I know that there were definite benefits from the session both in terms of fitness and technique. It may not have been a great session today, but it is the sort of session that might mean I have a good race in a month, or a year. Think of it as losing the battle in order to win the war.
A bad session isn't something to get upset about, but rather one of those things that happens when you are training long term. Don't think of it as a failure, but rather a stepping stone on the way to success.
