A winter kind of day today. Rainity, rain, rain.
Winter was always going to happen, it is not that I am particularly surprised, however, that doesn't make it more pleasant.
Waking up this morning I was very close to staying in bed. Veeeery close. One thing I am discovering is that when you are not training for a race it becomes a bit harder to get yourself out of bed when the weather is a little unpleasant outside. Perhaps that isn't so surprising, but it could make for an interesting winter. Still, perhaps it won't be such an issue, I have been getting myself up and out the door for quite some time now, I think I can probably manage it for quite some time more.
I certainly managed it this morning, getting myself out the door for a paddle in the end. And I got wet. Rather dripping wet.
Other than the rain, the paddle was a good one though. I am borrowing a fast, but unstable paddle board from a local shaper called YOB at the moment, which is a lot of fun, but rather twitchy. The unpleasant weather this morning also meant that the river was a little bit bumpy, making paddling the twitchy board a bit more challenging. While the board and the conditions made the session a challenge, it also made it rewarding to successfully get through the paddle. The satisfaction that comes from trying something new and learning new skills.
As fun as the paddle was this morning, there won't be any paddling for me tomorrow. Rather tomorrow morning it will be down to Claremont Pool to help coach the Swim Smooth Red Mist session. Coach Paul is away at the moment so tomorrow morning it will be myself and Sal Scaffidi running the session. Last time Paul was away I did a bit of coaching with Sal and I learnt a whole lot. There is nothing like getting down there and actually coaching for teaching you the ins and outs of the business. I am hoping the next two weeks will bring plenty of opportunities for just that.
With any luck it won't also be raining on us while we coach, but I suspect I may not be too lucky on that front. Even if it is raining, I am still looking forward to learning lots. Besides, I have seen the program for tomorrow and it is looking like a corker. Raining or not, the session should be a fun one to see.
