Running around

Another busy day today, lots of running around for my day job which is always a bit exhausting.

I also had a bit of running around for my other job, the coaching one, while also trying to fit in just a bit of exercise for myself. With regard to that, I have some exciting news about coaching and the direction it is going to be taking for the next little while, however, I am waiting until I have enough time to do a proper post about it, at the moment I am just a bit short on time to do it justice. Tomorrow hopefully.

The coaching running around including heading down to Claremont Pool to help with the Wednesday morning Red Mist Swim Smooth session. A real tough one this morning:

6 x 50m
6 x 100m
6 x 200m
6 x 300m
800m (for the fastest group), shorter distances for the others.

All on rather brief turn arounds. Looks simple enough on paper, particularly given that the longest distance (other than the 800) is 300m. That is pretty short for a Wednesday. In practice though it most certainly was not simple. Those 300s in particular really crushed people. Lots of the groups (but not all - looking at you Dave Glass) struggled to simply make the turn around, let alone get any rest. They all got through which was impressive to see. What was even more impressive was that most of the groups then had a good crack at the 800 too. Great backing up.

It was also a nice treat getting to watch this guy swim.

This is Olympic gold medalist Bill Kirby. He was swimming in the lane next to our Swim Smooth fast lane and he was cruisly matching pace with them. In his warm up. In board shorts (he forgot his bathers). Watching him  move though the water is an exercise in power. It is also a good reminder on how fast swimmers are so fast. Over in Swim Smooth we think of ourselves as swimming pretty well and at a good pace, however, the Bill's body rotation and kick are something else. He is clearly generating amazing power via his pull through due to body position and efficient biomechanics allowing good utilization of muscle and effect connection to the water. Sneakily watching him swim while coaching was a real treat.

The other bit of running around that I had for coaching today was to go and apply for working with children clearance. I don't really have any plans to work with children (other than my own), however, it is a requirement of the Development Coaching course from the weekend and so apply away I did. The application itself wasn't a big deal, in fact it was really a quite straight forward form that you hand in at the post office. My plan had been to do it yesterday but when I got to the post office their camera had died and so they couldn't take a passport photo (required for the application). Pretty darn annoying as it necessitated another trip to the post office today. After a few more tense moments today the camera finally fired into life and I was able to complete my application. One more step closer to being a certified coach.

On an unrelated note don't forget that you can use the DEREK15 code to get a 15% discount at the Running Warehouse. I used the code the other day to get myself these.

These are the new Mizuno Wave Horizons. The Horizon is Mizuno's new top of the line mild support shoe. It sits in the range above the Wave Inspire. Think of it as Mizuno's equivalent to the Asics Kayano if that helps. It is a great shoe, I have only been for one run in them, but I am loving it so far. I have been running in the Wave Inspires for years now, but I suspect these may take over from the Inspire as my mileage shoe of choice. Very nice.

Less coaching and a bit more exercise tomorrow. Today I managed to squeeze in a run, but hopefully tomorrow I will find time to get out on the paddle board and perhaps out on for another run. You may notice that I haven't been on the bike much this week. I did get out for 45km on Monday, but other than that I have been pretty quiet. That quietness is not an accident, I have a rather long ride planned on Friday as part of a charity ride for work and so I am being careful to not over do the cycling. There will be plenty of that later in the week.
