Busyness

Phew, what a day of busyness (as opposed to business).

One problem with losing an entire weekend to something is that you then have to recover the time somewhere to do the things that would normally have happened on the weekend. For me that time recovery happened today.

It was a day of much running around. We are currently in the process of buying a new car which required a bit of driving to the car yard and back etc. Twice. The first time to look at the car, the second time to actually drive the car once they had found the keys (what car yard loses the keys honestly?). So that cost me a bit of my day.

I also spent a bit of my day doing some personal development with Front Runner sports science guru Ben Green. As part of my coaching development I am doing a series of sessions with Ben to help bring my sports science knowledge a bit closer to par. I say a bit closer because it is an area where I definitely have room for improvement. These sessions with Ben are aimed at trying to reduce that gap, however, I am not expecting him to be a miracle worker. There is plenty of room for improvement here.

All this was going on while I was actually trying do my real day job too and perhaps even a bit of exercise if I could find the time. It was a busy kind of a day.

I did find the time for some exercise too by the way. One thing I am quite determined to maintain as the coaching thing gets more serious is my exercise. I am keen to try and maintain enough fitness to do some of the training with people. I have seen coaches who do train with their athletes and coaches that don't, and I much prefer to be one that can keep up (as much as possible) for some of the sessions at least. This obviously doesn't work for all sessions (swimming for example). Some sessions you are better off sitting back and watching. But with cycling for instance, it is very hard to see what an athlete is doing unless you are riding with them. The same can be said for long runs. I wouldn't plan to do all these sessions with athletes, but I would like to maintain the ability to have the option.

With that in mind I was on the bike today (well the Kickr actually as it was still raining quite a bit this morning). Another 90 minute spin on the bike that felt really pretty darn good today. Pushing a bit higher into the power levels today, up into the higher levels of what I used to consider my 'steady zone' with an average power a touch above 250W. Importantly though my heart rate was still nice and controlled, with an average heart rate in the 130s. It was a rewarding kind of session. Feeling like I had worked, but not over done it.

Hopefully a more normal day tomorrow with some training and some actual down time. That's the plan anyway.
