Day 2 of training down south today at my mini training camp, some good work done and some progress that I am really happy with.
The main bit of work today was a long run. One of the first long runs I have done since Ironman WA and certainly the first I have done since getting over my cold the other day.
Given the lack of recent long runs I was really happy with how today's run went. A good bit over 20km, reasonable pace and without working too hard. All good progress. The other nice thing about the run was where we did it. 20ish km spend running on trails like these. Yes please.
The trail we were on today runs for 13.5km from a cute little town called Cowaramup (affectionately known as Cow Town) to the iconic town of Margaret River. The trail has a great surface and lovely scenery. As well as that, because the trail follows an old railway line, it is also relatively flat. Today we had some great weather for the run making for an all round awesome run session. In fact after today's run I think this may now be my all time favourite running location.
Comparing today's run with my run last Saturday when I struggled to get through 15km, the two could not have been more different. Whilst today's run was still a long, long way from where I was before Ironman WA, it was certainly a big step in the right direction. It definitely convinces me that last Saturday I was still feeling the effects of my cold.
As well as now being properly well, the other factor in today's run is returning fitness. After running on Thursday I mentioned that in my experience the body remembers pretty quickly what exercise is all about. Today was another reminder of that. Still a long way to go, but so far I am really happy with the progress that I have made.
Other than a very enjoyable long run, the rest of the day has been spent doing a whole bunch of this
This, of course, is sitting around in the sun and doing a whole bunch of not a lot. The weather down here south of Perth has been absolutely lovely, mid 20s in temperature, blue skies, light winds, just perfect. A great place to be spending time, training or otherwise.
Tomorrow we are looking at a bit more running, before heading home from our brief little sojourn away from life. As good as getting away from it all and spending time training is, I will be happy to be home, with the family and getting back to the routine of reality.
