It hadn't been my intention to not blog yesterday, but as you can imagine with Christmas, sometimes the day just gets away from you. Such was the case with us yesterday, and to a large extent today too.
For us yesterday's busyness was not complicated, it was simply due to the usual Christmas mayhem. A bit of present opening in the morning and an extended family lunch for the rest of the day. That was all it took to fill up the day.
What yesterday didn't contain was any training. On Christmas Eve I mentioned that I had no intention of training on Christmas and that is exactly what I did. A lot of athletes (and I think triathletes are particularly bad at this) have trouble switching off and giving themselves a break from training. There is always that nagging feeling that you should be doing something, that you will be losing fitness by missing that one day. That you will be derailing your race plans. It can be very hard to switch off those kinds of thoughts, even for an important family occasion like Christmas.
I think it is quite important to make the effort to switch off though, not just from a sanity point of view, but also from a healthy relationship perspective. Many sports are pretty selfish affairs, taking up a lot of time and focus that would otherwise be spent with loved ones. Long course triathlon is a particularly deep time sink. I don't think it is too much to ask for us to surface from our obsession long enough to spend 24 hours will those who are important to us without the day being interrupted by a bike ride.
That was yesterday though. Today there was indeed some training. A bit of an easy spin this morning and then a cruisy swim a bit later in the day. When the days are glorious like they are at the moment and you are on holiday it can be pretty hard to resist getting out and doing a bit of exercise. I was realising that this week coming up is the first time in a couple of years that I have had a week off work and not been going away somewhere to race. The first time I have had time off to relax at home, train when I want and generally have a nice time. I sure intend to make of the most of it.
My plan this week is exactly that, spend time with the family and train (and see Rogue 1). If I get to Tuesday next week and I have done those things I will consider it a week of holidays well spent.
Of course today wasn't all about training. There were some more Christmas festivities to take part in, as well as the all important playing with Christmas presents, which of course included some Lego.
Tomorrow will probably include more of the same. After the excitement of Christmas and Boxing Day the kids are pretty shattered and so the plan for tomorrow is to have a nice relaxing day at home. They really need some quiet time to help them recover, before kicking on with the rest of the school holidays, so tomorrow will probably contain some time with a book or in front of the TV, maybe a bit more Lego. Should hopefully be a relaxing but fun day.
And of course it will include a bit more training for me.
