Relaxination

Another day, another bit of relaxing, the holidays continue.

Today has been a bit of a recovery day, but instead of recovering from a race of a hard day of training, today we have been recovering from Christmas and the associated festivities. The kids are tired (and a bit unwell) and the adults are just keen for a day that doesn't involve running around and entertaining. Today we tried to have just that.

I think we have largely succeeded. The kids have still struggled a bit, but they do tend to hit a low after Christmas and so having them be a little ratty was expected. Hopefully after a restful day today they will start to improve.

Although it has been an easy day, it hasn't been without training. Today was a return to the Kickr for a bit of threshold interval work.

The training was good, one of the first times since Ironman that I have felt capable of sustained higher intensity efforts. This is the sort session that I usually do on the Kickr since I find the trainer is ideal for really nailing the higher power efforts. You can produce exactly the power levels that you are after, which is always a bit hard to do on the road. On the road you are dealing with so many external influences, hills, corners, wind, vehicles etc, that it can be hard to go hard for sustained periods. Not to mention that high power usually means high speed and you can't always do that safely on the road.

Today though I was thinking of doing this session on the road. Being on holiday I have more than enough time to fit in my sessions so I thought I would take advantage of that and head out for a ride. Nice plan, but as it turns out the Kickr ended up being the right choice in the end anyway. I woke up this morning to hear rain and howling wind. Not exactly appealing riding conditions. Between the weather and my plans to do some intervals, riding on the Kickr ended up being an easy choice.

I mentioned above that being on holiday I have plenty of time to be fitting in my training, so this morning I had the absolute luxury of staying in bed for a while and reading, rather than getting up early and jumping on the bike. Very nice, but not as ideal as it sounds. Funnily enough this morning I was reminded again today why I train best around the structure of a working day. Without the time restrictions of work today to get me moving I ended up just procrastinating for ages with training. I got the session done my lunch time, but it was a real effort to get myself going. Not as issue I have to deal with when I am at work. Don't get me wrong it is great having the time to be able to train when I want and as much as I want. If somebody told me tomorrow that I didn't have to work anymore I am sure I would learn to get by without the structure of work to guide me. In fact I think it would probably be quite nice. But today reminded me that it possibly wouldn't be as much puppies and daisies as I like to think it would be.

Tomorrow, more relaxing.
