Damnation of Faust

A bit of a slow descent into madness this morning.

I knew I had a long session on the trainer coming up this morning, and I knew it was going to be tough, but it really turned out to be an effort. In the end I managed to get to three hours, but that was about my limit. Still I am very glad to have got through those three hours. In my view any time you are on the trainer for more than two hours you are doing well. Going over 3 takes a special kind of keen. Three hours was still a solid session though, particularly combined with a bunch of intervals. I was definitely feeling it by the end. If I am honest, stopping after three hours wasn't just because I was mentally fatigued, I was pretty shattered physically too. Definitely a session I am putting down as a win.

Besides the training, the other activity of the day was that I had my follow appointment with Marc See the physio today about my arm.

Long story short, about 4 weeks until I am swimming again, 6 weeks until I am back in proper full training. That is the prognosis anyway. This is definitely one injury where it is ruled by pain, so I am hopeful that things may settle down a little bit quicker than that. Certainly no load on the arm for another week while the bone mends. After that a gradual reintroduction of load, including riding a bike on the road. Then after that a gradual return to full training, including swimming. Not willing to commit to what it all means for Rottnest Long Course at this point. I plan to give myself a little bit more time before making that decision. Still it was good to get some definite guidance on what to expect and a way forward. Certainly not a rocket science injury, don't do things that hurt and give it a bit of time are what it boils down to. I think I can manage that.

So that is how my day went. But really, my day is fairly unimportant because tomorrow is both Busselton 70.3 and Ironman Australia (and Port Macquarie 70.3) and these races are much bigger news. My personal feel is that with the demise of Ironman Melbourne, Ironman Australia has seen a return to glory. There certainly seems to be a lot more interest in the race than I have seen for years which I think is great. Great to see such an historically important race return to significance. I have a few friends over there to race and hopefully they have great days out.

Busselton should be a great day out too. After all it usually is. This is the first time I haven't been involved for a couple of years and I am feeling it a little. Being out of racing so far this year means I am feeling a bit disconnected from WA Triathlon, so I have sort missed out on the hype build that usually comes with Busselton 70.3. But I still have a lot of friends racing down there tomorrow, (after all nearly all the triathletes in WA do) and I will be very excited to see how they go. Looks like most things are lining up for a good day. The weather appears to be coming to the party, the course should be quick like normal and the atmosphere seems to be electric. Things look like it should be another great year down at Busselton 70.3. I am certainly looking forward to watching and finding out.
