20/20

I am regularly amazed at how clear hindsight can be.

I woke up feeling fairly terrible this morning. Just a cold, but this morning was that first fun kick when the cold really lets you know it is there. Extra dose of misery just to make sure there is no doubt.

The hindsight bit comes in when I think about how I felt on my ride yesterday. It all makes more sense now. In fact thinking back to another time when I had a ride like that I was getting sick that time too, so perhaps I shouldn't act so shocked. In fact going back further than that it might explain why I was feeling so tired for chunks of last week.

This cold has really caught me by surprise. I can't think of anybody I have been around recently who is sick. Usually I see this sort of thing coming through the kids, but not this time as far as I am aware. Also usually when I get sick it starts with the usual sore throat etc and ends with a cough. This one happened the other way around. It started out as a bit of a cough on Thursday, then a bit more of a cough. By yesterday it was a real proper, chesty phlegmy cough. A proper quality cough as these things go. To be honest it had me a little concerned at that point, but the truth of it was that other than the cough I felt okay. It wasn't until this morning that I felt properly horrible.

I had a brief glimmer of light after my morning coffee and I thought, 'you know what I don't feel so bad, I think I am okay to train'. Once the glow of caffeine wore off though I was feeling pretty mediocre again.

So unfortunately that means I didn't get a chance to try running this morning. A bit frustrating really because I am getting ready to get back into proper training after having a extended recovery period post-Japan 70.3. The nice thing is that I have time on my side so no panic stations yet. Plus I am hopeful that this cold might only be having a brief visit, or that I might at least be part way through it, since I suspect I have actually been feeling a little off for few days now. Time will tell. For now though, time for rest and hydration. Luckily it is horrible outside again today, so it is an easy day to spend inside lying very still.

Now if you don't mind I have to get back to sipping tea and looking pathetic.
