Whoops

I had a little bit of an accident on my bike last night, which is the first one I have had for ages. I was doing an easy 70 minute spin, when I came unstuck. However, what makes this particular crash unusual is that my bike was on the wind trainer at the time.

It takes a special kind of skill to crash a wind trainer.

The cause of the crash itself was easy to identify, my rear dropout came free from the quick release holding the back of the bike to the Kickr. What caused it to come free is a bit more of a mystery, since I remember doing it up fairly tightly. I did move the trainer at one point, since the bike felt like it was on an angle, so perhaps that is when it came loose. However, in hindsight, the bike felt a little off kilter from the word go, so perhaps the bike was never quite properly attached.

When a bike comes off a normal wind trainer (with a back wheel attached), there is always a chance that as the spinning wheel hits the ground, you will shoot off forwards, like something from a Road Runner cartoon. With a direct drive trainer like a Kickr, once the trainer isn't holding you up anymore, nothing is, so it seems that you just kind of fall over. No harm done though, 'luckily' my fall was arrested by some furniture, so I didn't travel far. Bike is okay too as far as I can tell. I can't see any damage anyway, and it seemed okay on the ride this morning.

Speaking of riding this morning... Ummm, I was riding this morning. This time I took my chances on the road, at least out there you only have to deal with the cold, dark, wind, wet roads, inattentive drivers, attentive drivers who unfortunately don't like cyclists etc. Completely safe in comparison to the combination of a wind trainer and incompetence. It was a good ride though, no wind, lovely sunrise. I don't think it is my imagination, riding on the road seemed easier after spending some time on the trainer. The only issue was that I was doing intervals and I had to keep reminding myself to step up the intensity during the efforts, rather than just pressing a button on the trainer and waiting for it to do it for me. It reminded me that useful as the Erg mode on the Kickr is, it is very different to the road.

Running this afternoon. Running has been feeling good recently, so hopefully that continues.
