I had a run this morning, which went well, particularly since the alternerative would have been riding.
You know those sessions where you are starting out, full well in the knowledge that you are going to get rained on. This morning's session was one of them. And boy did it rain. And blow. Windy and rainy, hmmmm, perfect running conditions. It didn't rain for long, but the storm fronts were certainly going for quality over quantity, with easily enough rain to leave me saturated.
As annoying as the rain was, the most unpleasant bit was actually the wind. Towards the second half of the run it must have been costing me around 10 seconds/km. It was howling. Like running into a wall at times, trust me I know, having run into a number of walls in my time. This was very similar, just a bit more damp.
The upside was that the run was actually pretty slick, which is interesting because it wasn't what I set out to do. I really just set out to go running, so I was very surprised when I checked my average pace after 30 minutes. I had been going a lot quicker than I had intended, but it hadn't felt like I was working hard for it. I slowed down a little in the second half, but not by a lot. In the end I was pretty stoked with how it had gone. I was also pretty stoked to get inside.
On the bike tonight, but I kind of think I might jump on the trainer. The weather is meant to have dried up by this afternoon, so it isn't really bad weather that I am hiding from. It is more that this is the session last week that I did on the road and ended up wishing that I hadn't. Plus I usually have a couple of rides a week and I like to get at least one of them done on the trainer. This week I won't have my Thursday ride since I will be travelling for work, so this is kind of my only chance to get a trainer session in. Plus this kind of interval session lends itself quite well to being done on a trainer. At this point I feel like I am trying to convince myself, but I guess it doesn't really matter either way. It is not as if the trainer is exactly the easy option. I will see what I am feeling like this afternoon, and weather the forecast is correct.
Speaking of trainers I have come to realise another upside to using one. It has allowed me to squeeze just a little bit more life out of some training kit that I thought was passed it. You know that cycling kit you have which is just a little too baggy, just a little too see through to be used on the road. I have a bit of that stuff, but the essential padding bits are all still there. Riding on the trainer has allowed me to get that gear back out and get some more use from it. Plus it has saved me from soaking my current good gear in sweat. Win win.
