Adventures

In the end I did manage to get out for a run yesterday afternoon. Wow, what an adventure. By yesterday afternoon Perth was a wild and woolly place. Absolutely blowing a gale and periodic squalls, nasty ones. It made for an.... interesting run.

Amazingly I didn't get the wet though, I got rained on a little bit, but not to much. I almost got blown into South Australia, but at least I was dry.

As an example of how strong the wind was, a couple of times I nearly tripped myself over because one leg blew into the other one. Well that is my story anyway...

The wind made for some interesting splits though, a bit of a mix of super quick, and on the slow side. The most frustrating bit was towards the end, where I was very much looking forward to a tail wind, only to get there and find the wind blowing in my face. I am not entirely sure how the wind managed it, since it had definitely been behind me prior to that. Something to do with following the river or something like that, whatever the reason, very unpleasant surprise.

Good solid run though, despite the conditions. It is good to be able to get out when the weather is simply atrocious and still get in a good session. Not as good as going out when the weather is lovely and having a good session of course. But I will take a good run where ever I can get it.

After my run the storms really rolled in, with some truly spectacular squalls hitting during the night. To the point that when I woke up in the morning I checked my e-mail to make sure the pool hadn't blown away or something.

It hadn't.

I was very surprised to see just how many people where at the pool given the weather we had been having. It is a good demonstration of the stubbornness most athletes (me included) that they will go against all good sense and head out training anyway.

Despite the odd ominous flash of lightening (pffff, call that lightening, go and live in Darwin) we got through the swim session and it went okay. Did I ever tell you about the time I was in a pool that got struck by lightening? No. Oh well, story for another time. It wasn't very fun.

Anyway, back to the session. I missed the session last Wednesday due to travelling for work. There is always a bit of trepidation when heading to the Wednesday Swim Smooth session, when you know you have missed a few. I know I have been swimming okay, so I wasn't that concerned, but there is always that voice at the back of you head saying 'this is going to huuuurt'. The voice was sort of right. The session went well for most of it, but I faded towards the end. I am happy to call the session a success though, given how the majority of it went.

Bike/run day again tomorrow and at the moment the plan is to do the ride on the road. But we shall see. Looking out the window there is currently glorious blue skies. Hopefully they are still here tomorrow. The forecast is being a little vague, it will depend a lot of just how isolated those showers are.
