Conflicted

I had one of those mornings this morning. I just couldn't decide, should I or shouldn't I, go or don't go.

The only thing I had on the program this morning was an easy, taperish spin on the bike. It was on the program for this afternoon, but I often knock these sorts of sessions over in the morning to free up the rest of my day. However, I was aware that another option would be to leave the session until the afternoon and do it as part of a ride home.

The advantage of doing the session in the afternoon would be that it is a slightly more efficient use of my time, plus it meant I could stay in bed, plus it would also mean that I got to avoid riding when it was 7 degrees (ie this morning).

The downside to leaving the ride until the afternoon, was that this morning was almost dead still, no wind, perfect for riding. Leaving the ride until the afternoon would probably mean trading still conditions for windy ones. On top of that it would mean I had the ride hanging over my head for the whole day. Also, whilst riding home from work would be a slightly more efficient use of my time, the alternative was spending time with my wife on the drive to and from work, so hardly time wasted. Finally, whilst it was cold, a certain part of my quite likes rugging up and going for a ride in the cold (another part of me hates that part of me, just a little bit).

So on the one hand I had less sleep, but riding in perfect conditions, on the other I had a warm bed.

In the end I chose the perfect conditions.

It was a close run thing though, I actually went back to bed at one point, only to get back up a couple of minutes later and go riding instead. Silly I know, but both options had a lot of appeal. I was about 40 minutes through my ride and on my way back home when I realised that I was still debating the various pros and cons of my decision. At that point it occured to me that the decision had more or less been made.

The ride was good though. The conditions, where in fact perfect. I headed out determined to make the easy spin be an easy spin and for the most part succeeded. I had a few pushes, just to remind myself that I could, but mostly it was just easy cruising.

Tomorrow it will be down to the pool for one last session (I really do plan on getting out early this time) and then a bit of a solid ride tomorrow afternoon. After that it will be very nearly Busselton time.
