Hot Stuff

Wow, tough day today. Perth is just slightly cooler than the surface of the sun today. Well okay, it is only meant to be getting to 44 degrees, but I think that is probably hot enough. That sort of temperature means that you spend most of the day inside trying to hide from it. Either that or you spend a bit over 4 hours riding in it, either one. Guess which one I did.

I wasn't supposed to be riding that far today, in fact on my program I wasn't supposed to be riding at all today. But I am off to Darwin tomorrow (more on that later) and so I won't have time to do my ride tomorrow, so I moved it to this morning.

Knowing that I had a fair amount of time on the bike ahead of me, and that Perth was going to try and do an impression of a blast furnace today, I headed out pretty early. With the early start the ride wasn't too bad. It certainly was getting warm by around 9:00, but at least on a bike you can drink as much as you want, and pour water over yourself too for that matter. The ride was still tough work, but not that bad. All up it went pretty well and felt okay too, so that was nice.

On the program I also had a short run to do off the bike. Given the weather I was really looking for excuses to not go, but my wife whispered quite words of encouragement, along the lines of 'It is only 32 degrees at the moment, that is less than the Mandurah 70.3, get out of here'. So that got me out the door. The run actually went pretty okay. I headed out in my new Mizuno Mushas, which is the shoe I am hoping will become my race shoe. Felt good. Very blue too which is important as well. I haven't done much running in light, low cushioning shoes and so I had my concerns, but really it felt fine. So far so good there then.

I am about to head down to the pool for the Saturday Swim Smooth session, which could be a bit of an interesting experience. It could also be pretty lonely. There was a sprint distance tri on this morning out in Armadale, that combined with the fact that it has just hit 38 degrees might keep a lot of people away I suspect. Oh well, this is to make up for yesterday morning and so it needs to get done.

Going back to my earlier comment about Darwin. I am going to Darwin tomorrow morning for work. I will be up there until Thursday morning. Other than having to be away from my family for 4 days, I am really looking forward to the trip. It will be great to be up there and catch up with everyone. Last time I was up there a lot of people where away including Daryl. But this time I think most people are in town and so it will be great to be up there and training with the old squad again. Hopefully I can keep up. I will probably have to do some work while I am up there as well, but I am hoping that doesn't get in the way of training too much.

While I am away I will try and keep the updates regular, but I will have to see what the situation is once I am up there. I suspect I will be able to post updates most days, but if not then I will be back and typing by Thursday.

To the pool...
