Running this morning. Very unusual, given today is Saturday and Saturday morning training has nearly always been a long ride. Still it was a nice change, and as several people have mentioned to me it was nice to be finished training at a reasonable time on a Saturday morning.
The run session was a repeat of the long interval session that I was doing during the week last week. Heading in I was not particularly keen. I have been feeling a little bit flat this week, a bit weary. The mind was starting to play the usual games, 'not sure how good I am feeling', 'feeling so tired', etc. But once I got going the session went very well. Probably the best version of this session I have done, so that was good. I still am tired, it isn't entirely mental. I think a lot of this week has been spent recovering from the long run last Sunday. It has taken a while but I think I am nearly there. A week of taper and I know I will be there.
The other session for the day was a swim this afternoon. Back to the wetsuit. I personally don't notice all that much difference in my swimming between being in a wetsuit and not, other than the speed obviously. I don't find I have to modify my stroke or anything. So each time I put it on I question whether I need to bother. But each time I know it is the right thing to do. Comfortable or not, I think it is crazy to head into a race without having spent any time in the wetsuit you intend to use. So that is what today was about. Spending the time.
Speaking of time, I actually did some stuff against the clock with the wetsuit on, and I was very happy with the result. The wetsuit makes a big difference obviously, no newsflash there, but I was pleasantly surprised at just how fast I was swimming in it. I swim in an Xterra wetsuit, which to be honest I chose because I won it. However, so far I have been very impressed with it. It certainly gives up nothing to the BlueSeventy Helix that I used to swim in (and loved). It is hard to tell if one wetsuit is any quicker than another, but this one certainly isn't slower. All up this was a good confidence boosting swim leading into next weekend.
On the bike in the morning tomorrow for a shortish ride. I am planning on dolling the bike up tonight, putting the fast bits on. I have been debating whether to bother, or simply do a spin to check everything is working later in the week. But if I was racing away I would be checking stuff this weekend. If anything is amiss, discovering it later in the week will be to late.
The wind is howling at the moment, hopefully it has gone away by the morning.
