There was a wind of biblical proportions blowing this morning. I am trying to remember if there are any bible stories involving a massive winds, and at the moment I am drawing a blank. However, if you took the story of Noah and replaced the rain with wind, you would get an idea of the sort of wind that was blowing in Perth this morning.
A bit of Perth wind patterns 101. Perth essentially has two winds, the Easterly (and variations on that like the classic South Easter) and the Westerly, although more typically the South-Wester, better known as the Doctor. In Summer when the Easterly blows Perth gets hot. The longer it blows the hotter Perth gets. Day 1 you might get low 30s, Day 2 Mid 30s, Day 3 High 30s, Day 4 40s and so on. This keeps going until the Doctor comes in and cools the place down. When we got hot Summer days it is because we have big Easterlies blowing. Today is one of those days, the forecast today is for 36 degrees.
So anyway, it was windy.
That made the ride this morning a little bit interesting since one direction you were slogging into the wind creeping along and the other direction you were flying. It made the interval's this morning a bit challenging logistically. I got there in the end but it required some interesting route planning.
As I mentioned last night I ended up dressing the P5 up in all the pretty bits (race wheels etc) to make this mornings ride a bit of a race day test. I am pleased to say everything worked as intended. The Dyma wheel cover got through the ride without issue. In fact it was a good bit of experience for me, being out in big winds on a disc. It demonstrated that the disc doesn't make that much difference to stability. That is what everyone says, but really it is one of those things that I needed to experience for myself in order to believe it. All up I was very happy to finish the ride and get out of the wind though.
After the ride it was time for a quick run off the bike, which also went well. I started off feeling a little bit flat but worked into the run pretty quickly so all up it ended up being a good solid little run. It was a good way to finish up my last week of lead up training, I am now officially into my taper, which is something I have been looking forward to.
Now time for a quick community announcement prompted by something that I saw on my run today. If you are a billionaire and you own a boat that is so big that you need to wait until low tide so that it can fit under the bridges at the mouth of the Swan River, bridges that Rottnest Ferries fit under without trouble, then I think you have too much money and you should own a smaller boat. What you have is just silly. There you go. I admit as community announcements go it probably has a pretty limited applicability, but I thought I would get it out there.
Total rest day tomorrow. Bring it on.
