Rinse and repeat

Ride the bike, wash the bike, ride the bike, wash the bike. That is more or less what riding in Perth is like at the moment. Every time you head out the bike gets covered it grime and crud from the wet roads. Not filthy, just enough that the drive train gets that nice crunchy feel. Not that dirty, but dirty enough.

The ride this morning was a bit of a mixed bag. It included a whole bunch of intervals that started off okay and then went steadily down hill (not literally unfortunately). For the first five intervals or so I was feeling okay, getting pretty close to the target speeds etc. But after that I was feeling less and less comfortable, I felt like I was fatiguing and struggling to find the go. By interval eight I was feeling low, by interval ten I had had enough. With a statement something along the lines of "stuff this I am sick of these intervals and sick of this road" I turned to head for home. However, on the way home, on a new stretch of road, I thought I would give another interval a go. It went great, I felt quick, it didn't feel like I was fighting it. It went so well that I turned around and did another two intervals along the same stretch of road. By that time I really needed to be heading home, so I did the last couple of intervals on the way home, and amazingly they felt pretty okay as well. Maybe I really did just need a change of scenery from where I normally do my intervals. I am beginning to suspect the wind does funny things around that area that can make riding a struggle, no matter which direction you are heading in. Certainly the difference between where I did the first ten intervals and where I did the last five was signficant.

The swim this afternoon down at Claremont was pretty okay. Not a particularly inspiring session today, but full of skills to help with open water, plenty of sighting, bands and drafting work. Exactly the sort of work you need.

Whilst the ride this morning was a bit of a mixed bag, I am still feeling about 100% better than I was feeling this time last week.
