Given my decision to do Sunday's training yesterday due to the weather, this morning I was due to head out for my Saturday long ride. Only problem was, when I woke up the roads where still wet and there was still a bit of drizzle. At that point I ended up making a daring and controversial decision. I went back to bed.
Today's forecast was for the day to clear up as the day went along, so I figured rather than head out into the wet, I would have a relaxing morning and head out later in the day when it had dried out a bit. In the end it was a great decision. As a result of delaying the session I got to head out when it was a bit warmer, drier and lighter. It ended up being a great ride. I even just wore knicks and a jersey. No arm warmers, no tights, no vest, nothing extra. It is the first time I have ridden like that in months.
Whilst the late training session worked really well, I wouldn't do it every weekend, since it tends to get in the way of the rest of the day. Plus the afternoon is when things often come up on the weekend, the sort of things that usually have to take priority over training. But just for today, it worked great.
The ride was actually a shortish one for a Saturday (or even a Sunday), but it had a 20km race pace time trail in it. I figured the best place to do that sort of thing would be the cycleway beside the freeway on the way to Mandurah. So off the freeway I went. Whilst the weather had cleared up by this afternoon, it was hardly blue skies and sunshine. It was still pretty windy and a bit grey. But despite those conditions the 20km race simulation went very nicely and so did the rest of the ride, with good pace both into and with the wind. I was very happy with how the ride felt overall.
After the ride it was time for a short but quick run off the bike. Those sort of short high intensity runs don't tend to agree with me much, which is why I don't really enjoy sprint distance tris, but despite that the run went well, with good speed for the distance.
All up, despite the changes that ended up being made this weekend, it has been a solid two days of training. I am calling it a success.
