Well I successfully survived my swim in the Swan River without becoming breakfast for anything, didn't even step on any crabs, which I gather happens more than you would think. Did a couple of laps of a nice 2km loop near Claremont, which was certainly a way to start the day. Not sure if it was a good way, but a way nonetheless.
The guys I was swimming with are training for this
Manhattan Island Marathon Swim
Which just boggles my mind. 28.5 miles, so just over 45km. OF SWIMMING. Wow. Running that far seems bad enough. There are apparently 7 people heading over there from Perth, which I think is a pretty good effort.
Quite a wintery morning today with lots of wind and bits of rain. A hot Milo sort of morning. The sort of morning where it is hard enough getting yourself onto the bike, so finding myself standing in the middle of the Swan River was a little surreal at times. The weather manifested itself as a choppy river. But in the end it wasn't to bad. I got to see a few fish, swallow a decent chunk of salt water etc. All good really.
Was good to get the wetsuit back on. My next race is the Cairns 70.3 in June which is likely to be a wetsuit legal race. I haven't worn the wetsuit since the Albany Half Ironman in January, so it was good to get it back out and start getting used to it again. I know some people aren't fans of wetsuits, but I love them. Swimming is my strongest leg, so I think theoretically wetsuits are meant to help me the least, but I still love it. All that easy speed. If there was a piece of kit that made that sort of difference to my riding and running then I would probably be wearing it right now. Although with the chop it didn't feel quite as comfy as usual this morning. Still it is good to get out in difficult conditions now and then. You never know when you are going to get a swim like at Ironman Melbourne this year.
On to the bike for a jaunty couple of hours tonight to finish off the day. Hopefully it isn't raining.
