Today I sort of successfully kept myself in check on my run. I say sort of because it wasn't entirely successful, but it was a good improvement over my run on Sunday. Today's run was a slower, less intense run than Sunday's, which is exactly what it needed to be.
Whilst slower isn't ideal, the lower intensity of today's run is really what the goal of the session was. As I said on Sunday, trying to go too hard too early is a recipe for injury and that is exactly what training sessions like the one I did on Sunday will lead too. I have already had a few warning signs from my body and I am well aware that ignoring them and pushing on is not a good idea.
Heading into the run today I knew I had to consciously go easier to give my body a chance to re-adjust to running. Give myself time to build up fitness and strength in the right areas again. That was the aim.
Really I probably need to drop another gear again over what I did today, which will be hard to do. Sometimes going slow is as hard and going fast. But the reality is that today's run was still a little bit too hard. On the upside though, I ran further and 14 seconds/km quicker than this time last week for the same average heart rate so that is very encouraging. Signs like that show me that the fitness is returning quite nicely, despite how it may feel sometimes.
My biggest annoyance at the moment is actually weight rather than fitness. While the fitness is coming along nicely, I am struggling to get my weight to go in the right direction. I haven't gained heaps of weight in my time off, but I have put on some pudge (a few kilos) which I think would have been impossible to avoid. Now that I am training again I was hoping that would start to shift, but instead I have actually got heavier over the last week or so. One of the reasons I am keen to see it start moving in the right direction is because I know how much difference it will make to running. Dropping a bit of weight will make the running easier and less taxing on my body, both of which would be very welcome right now. My diet is pretty much on track at the moment, adhering closely to the guidelines given to me last year by David Bryant from Catalyst Nutrition and Dietetics, so I don't think it is that. I suspect it could just be that I am simply not training enough yet to really get the weight moving. The diet I am following was what I was doing when I was in full training, and I am nowhere near that yet. In which case it isn't a huge concern because that will come in time. The other factor could be that I have been on serious antibiotics for about 4 weeks now, so I am fairly sure my gut function is probably out the window. So the issue with the weight may simply be that my digestive system is not working the way it usually does. Once again that should be sorted with time. A bit annoying though to have the weight going up once I started being active again.
Tomorrow I should find out whether this plate will be coming out this week or not. Quietly hoping Dr Hewitt says yes.
