Spectating

While I am not a big fan of being on an enforced break from racing, it has been a great chance for me to indulge my inner spectator.

Usually I struggle to enjoy watching triathlon, because I can't help but feel that I should be out there racing. One of the silver linings of this injury is that the pressure of taking part is removed, and so instead I can sit back and enjoy watching.

And tomorrow, ohh boy, what watching there will be.

Tomorrow 70.3 Geelong is on and it is looking like it will be a smashfest of a race. Both the men's and women's field are chock block of big names in both the pro fields and the age group fields. I (like a lot of people) will be interested to see how Levi Maxwell goes in his first pro race. In fact this is one of the biggest pro fields I have seen in an Australian race for a while, on both the men's and the women's sides. It seems like half the triathletes in Australia are based in Geelong, and most of them are turning up tomorrow.

It may be that with Melbourne Ironman cancelled a lot of Victorians readjusted their focus to this race instead. Whatever the reason it is a quick looking field.

On top of that, it looks like tomorrow is shaping up to be spectacular on the weather side. I raced over in Geelong back in 2014 and for those who have read my race report, you may recall that I was not the biggest fan. I wasn't particularly bothered enamoured by the bike course and the weather was terrible, gale force winds and scorching temperatures. Tomorrow does not look like that. All the photos I have seen of the course have been full of calm water and blue skies. It looks like it should be a great day.

I don't often get excited about races over East in Australia. Often the courses and conditions don't suit me that much. It is one of the reasons I race up in Asia so much. I am even less likely to get excited about a race over East which I have previously had a bad experience at. So I was surprised to find that I am a bit excited about 70.3 Geelong. It feels like it should be a big day. It actually feels like the sort of big occasion race that it would be fun to be a part of. That can't happen this year obviously, but I sure intend to enjoy watching.
