Big moment today. I rode my bike on the road. And not just any bike, I rode my new Falco V. The fact I rode my Falco is significant as it is a TT bike and I have not been on one of them since I dismounted one rather rapidly back in November last year.
The ride was great. Actually that is a bit of a lie, it was a little horrific to see just how difficult an easy ride to the City and back was. But the riding bit went well. My shoulder felt fine and my confidence on the bike wasn't as bad as I was expecting. My shoulder was a bit uncomfortable down on the aero bars, but that is not that surprising. It was absolute joy to be out on the bike again though.
The ride wasn't all for pleasure though, this one had a purpose and that was heading down to the City to volunteer at the City of Perth Triathlon.
Some of you may remember I volunteered down at the City of Rockingham Triathlon a month or so ago. Helping out at that race I had such a good time that I was keen to do some more and the first real opportunity I had to do that was today.
Having a chance to volunteer again wasn't my only reason for heading down though. The City of Perth Triathlon is not a new event, in fact in various forms it has had a long history, including being a World Championship course. However, it hasn't been run for a few years. This year the race was back with an exciting new course, which I was really keen to see, I figured volunteering would be a good way of doing just that.
The new course makes use of Elizabeth Quay, which is a big infrastructure project that has just been completed in Perth. The Quay is a man made inlet with a load of public space around it. The Triathlon was the first sporting event to make use of it. As one person said to me, it was like the facility was designed for a triathlon. It was great to watch.
One thing I like about volunteering at races is that you have a great vantage point and so, just like it was at Rockingham, the racing today was a fun spectating event. The race today was a sprint distance and there were some top guys and girls just flying around. Always a lot of fun watching these really quick guys do their thing. It was a great day for Break Your Limits too, claiming 1st and 2nd over all. It was nice being able to watch it all unfold.
It was really great being down there and being involved, catching up with some mates etc. A very nice way to spend the morning.
It definitely isn't racing, but it is not a bad substitute for now.
