The appointment with the Surgeon today went well. Despite the fluid release on Monday, the Doctor felt that the wound was looking good and that there was no sign of further fluid build up. In fact, other than the fluid build up he thought the healed wound looked 'perfect'.
Based on that, the plate will be staying in for the next couple weeks, with removal tentatively penned in for early March.
I had further discussions with the Surgeon today around what could have caused this repeated swelling and oozing etc. The surgeon mentioned that reacting to the plate itself is theoretically possible, but he hadn't seen it before. He did say though that he thought it was a reaction to something in the wound, plate, stitching, something. What has become apparent from numerous tests and from my surgery two weeks ago is that the wound isn't infected. In fact the Surgeon said today that he suspected by assuming it was infected we had probably been over treating it. Using a sledge hammer to crack a walnut so to speak. My previous surgery probably wasn't necessary. He was even tempted to take me off my 14 tablets/day of antibiotics, but he has left me on them to be safe.
Hearing all this is kind of reassuring. I have been assuming that I had done something wrong, either not keeping the wound clean enough, or overdoing some training etc. However, it sounds like it might just be that my body is unhappy about having a bit of metal stuck in it. I can't blame it really. There was nothing I not really any way I could have known that my body would have reacted this way. Knowing that doesn't really change anything, but it makes me feel a little bit better.
The other nice thing about the appointment today is that I have been given the go ahead to do a bit of training again. Nothing too much, certainly no swimming, probably just all on the bike. The Doctor has asked me take it easy since all the antibiotics I am on are giving my body a kick. I suspect taking it easy won't be a problem since I am not sure I have the fitness to do anything more anyway. Getting back on the bike and doing some exercise again will be very welcome though.
That is the plan for the morning. Very much looking forward to it.
