Sorry I missed doing a post yesterday. I ended up being a little busy watching a certain Star Wars movie. The day just got away from me. By the time we got home and had the kids in bed, had some dinner etc it was just a bit late to be doing a post.
Totally worth it though, the movie was awesome.
Certainly getting to that time of year, when it is a bit less about training and a bit more about life. I am about to head out to the first of our family Christmas functions with another one on tomorrow. As well as the Break Your Limits Christmas gathering. The calender is about to start looking rather full.
Not to full to fit some training in though. There has been a couple of good sessions over the last two days. Well, as good as can be expected given my current limitations.
Yesterday I was out doing walking hill repeats. It was actually a pretty good session considering it involved walking up and down the same hill 21 times. Surprisingly solid. The intensity wasn't as high as doing stairs, but it was a more consistent effort which is actually what I was after. Another advantage of the hills was that I found it easier to activate the muscles associated with running compared to stairs. Stairs was certainly a massive muscle workout, but I found it hard to isolate the running muscles. I came out of that session with shattered quads, which whilst impressive in their soreness, isn't actually an area you tend to work much during a run. On the hills I found it much easier to focus on core activation and driving from the glutes. I enjoyed the session enough that I plan to head back again tomorrow morning. Another advantage is that the hill is a two minute walk from my house. Handy. Perhaps tomorrow I might see if we can knock out 30 reps of the hill.
This morning it was time for two thrilling hours on the Kickr. Sarcasm noted. Still I got to catch up on a movie. So not all bad. My focus on the Kickr this morning was heart rate control. I have been finding that I have been working very hard on the Kickr as my fitness fails to back up the power figures that I think I should be holding. Today my plan was to ignore the power and instead sit at an appropriate intensity, something that I managed to mostly achieve. It meant that I got to the end of two hours still feeling fairly okay. Well as okay as you can after two hours on the Kickr.
The right shoulder held up okay to a longer trainer session, but there was a bit of soreness. Enough soreness that it forced me to realise that riding on the road this morning (which I briefly considered) would not have been a good idea. I can hold my right hand on the handlebars, but I can't do much with it there, not even support my weight really. Riding a bike like that would have been asking for irritation or injury. I just have to keep reminding myself to take it slowly. Let my body heal.
Speaking of healing the improvements are continuing with my shoulder. I can now use my right arm to lift a full bottle of milk to my mouth to drink out. Even just a couple of days ago I wouldn't have had the strength or range of motion to do that. So the shoulder is getting there.
Now off to Christmas. Let the merriness commence.
