Tired now. But it is a good sort of tired.
Today I got in a good proper day of training. I think probably the first since my surgery. I have had days were I felt like I was managing to do some work but today I actually felt like I trained properly. I am certainly feeling it now too.
The day started off with a session down the pool. After seeing what I could and couldn't do last swim, today I went in with a bit more of a plan. I managed to get about 3000m done as a mixture of kick, one armed swimming and my strange sort of 3/4 stroke swimming. I didn't feel like I was working my shoulder overly much, but I still came out of the session sore, which is a lesson in itself. Things are still healing, I still have to be careful (surgery was 4 weeks ago on Thursday, so it is still kind of recent). The swimming is low intensity and a bit frustrating, but at least it is something. Today I felt like I was able to get a bit of focus on my left arm technique, which is something I struggled with during my last swim. Any little gains I can get in technique during this period of injury count as wins in my eyes.
The great session of the day came later in the afternoon with another hour spent on the Alter-G. Today was my first increase in weight on the Alter-G, up to 75% of my body weight and it is amazing how much difference that 5% makes. It is only slight, but the running feels a little bit more normal. The heart rate also correlated a little more closely with the speed I was running. The treadmill speed is still much quicker than I would be running under full weight on the road, but today I felt like I was working for that speed a little more. The nice thing was that the shoulder wasn't really that sore. I still gave it a few rests, but they were more for precaution that need. Similar to my swim, I also felt like I was able to focus on technique a bit more during this run session. As with swimming, any technique gains I can get out of this period will mean that this down time hasn't completely gone to waste.
After today I am keen to continue my week of regularish training, so it will be back down to the pool in the morning. I am not entirely sure what I will be doing. After this morning I will probably be taking it back a notch so that I don't push things too much. It may well end up being almost an entire session of kick, although I am sure I will throw in at least a little bit of one arm swimming to keep myself from going insane. I will figure that bit out in the morning.
See what the morning brings.
