Strange morning this morning. Very hazy, with smoke covering a lot of the city. The smoke is apparently from controlled burns that were done down near Busselton yesterday. Just something that you get in Perth at this time of year.
Made training a bit unpleasant though. Even being in the pool, it was hard to shake the sensation that you were breathing in smoky air. A lot of the guys at the pool were feeling it too, with a few jumping out early. Hard to put a finger on exactly the impact of the smoke (if anything) but it certainly seemed like everybody in the squad was just missing 5% or so, I was certainly struggling in the first part of the session and even now my throat is feeling a little hoarse from it.
Messy air aside, the session went okay. One of those slow burn sessions that we often get on Wednesday. A pyramid and a half, working down from 400m to 100m, back up to 500m on a quicker turn around and then back down to 100m on a quicker turn around again. Nothing looking particularly onerous until you find yourself at 4000m, exhausted and facing a 1000m timed effort. Given where the effort fell in the session (at the end) it went okay. Certainly not my fastest 1000m, but not a bad time given fatigue and that I wasn't feeling particularly quick during it. Certainly quicker than I had expected.
Swimming training has been a bit hodgepodge since Rottnest Long Course, with a recovery week and then being at Rottnest last weekend, so it was good to get another solid session under the belt and see that swimming is still feeling good. I am certainly looking forward to getting back into the swing of swim training though.
No training this afternoon. Really looking forward to the afternoon off after feeling a bit flat yesterday afternoon. Hopefully a bit of a chance for the body to catch up after the weekend.
