The Island Life

So here we are on Rottnest and we do indeed have internet access, ah the wonders of the modern age that we live in. I could have got online yesterday, but it was just one to many things after the efforts of getting the Island, settling in etc.

Another thing that was one step to far was getting out for a run last night. I had every intention, but to be honest we were having a lot of run on the beach, snorkeling etc that I thought I would let it slip. Some things are more important.

I didn't let it slip it slip far though, heading out and getting the run done this morning. And what a lovely run it was. I am not sure what it was, but the running just felt easy. A bit of mixed pace work, warming up, stretching the legs a bit and then warming down again, but it felt good. Really surprising given the hilly terrain I was running over. I effectively ran over half of the Rottnest Long Course bike course and as anyone who has read my race report will know, that is one undulating road. Still, despite the constant up hills and down I have pulled up okay. A tip to the race organisers though, if they wanted to make the race into one of the toughest going around, all they would have to do would be to make the run leg go out for one lap of the bike course (please don't do that).

Running here has made me realise just how perfect a place it would be for a training camp. I would be tempted to build in a week or so of holiday here every year to get in a really solid week of training. There is endless good but tough road to run on. You effectively have a cycling loop that is closed to cars and as many different swimming locations as you can think of. Sure getting here is a pain and the trip costs more than it should. But it can't be beaten for convince.

With respect to further training the plan is to head out and get a bit of a swim in today, or tomorrow, or both. The weather is a little questionable at the moment. Quite nice now but meant to get rainy later and there has been a solid wind blowing all day (it is Rottnest after all). All this means that the water isn't terribly attractive right now. Still one of the nice things about Rotto is that there is always some water somewhere that is nice. So chances are that I will get out swimming at some point today.

We have been here for just over a day now, but I think it took me most of yesterday to actually start relaxing. It has been such a long time since I have been on a proper, relaxing, holiday that I may have forgotten how. I am still not entirely convinced that I have got it right yet. Will just have to keep working on it.

No matter what happens this afternoon swim wise, tomorrow morning it will be out on the bike for a chance to re-familiarise myself with the Rottnest Long Course bike leg. I have to say I am not looking forward to it all that much, I was a bit over the course by the 4th lap. The idea of another 4 or 5 laps isn't thrilling me. Although it might be nice to ride the roads going at a lower intensity. Still I might have to see if I can find some different roads to try. Plus it will be lovely to be out on the road and not have to worry about cars etc, so it won't be all bad.

Besides, I am here on holiday, doing not a lot. So I can't complain to much.
