I have had this before and will undoubtedly have it again. The overpowering sense of impending doom that comes before a Wednesday morning swim set when I haven't been to one for a couple of weeks. The knowledge that you are willingly about to put yourself through a session that will be both long and hard and the worry that you might be a little under prepared for it.
Despite my concern and my lack of swimming in the past 10 days, today's session went fairly well. It didn't hurt that it was on the easier side for a Wednesday morning. Well kind of, if you can call a 5km swim set with two 1000m timed efforts easy. Actually thinking about it, during the last set of 20 x 50m I was holding on by pure stubbornness, so perhaps describing the session an easyish isn't so correct. Even still, the session went well. The times for both 1000s was very pleasing. Particularly the second 1000m when I handed over lead of the lane to lane-mate Andrew and he absolutely smashed it. Stepping up and finding an extra gear for a 1000m effort, after 3000m of swimming, was an impressive effort on his behalf.
As I mentioned above, by the last 500m of the session I was absolutely spent. But it was the righteous fatigue that comes from a session well done. Fatigue that you have earned.
It was nice to return to Wednesday swimming and not have it blow up in my face.
On a very different note, I am about to go away for a few days and may not be online during that time. We are all heading on a quick family holiday back to Rottnest. This is a break that we had originally planned to take for the Rottnest Long Course. However, when I withdrew from the race earlier in the year I moved the accommodation dates to this weekend. When I re-entered the race I couldn't move the accommodation back due to availability and so we figured we would just make this weekend into a mini-break. I am really, really looking forward to it. I actually can't remember the last time I went anywhere for a few days that wasn't either for work or a race. Admittedly we aren't going far, but it is far enough. A few days of rest and relaxation, a bit of training, fun in the sun, watching quokkas, no nervousness about an impending race. All good stuff.
Anyway, I am not sure if I am going to have a chance to be online while we are on Rottnest and it is not something that I am going to chase with any real zeal. If I am not online, then I will talk to everyone again on Sunday afternoon.
Have a good weekend, I know I will.
