Not quite over it apparently

Busy afternoon. Hence why it is 8:15 and I am just getting to this now.

Got out for a run this morning. Some good and bad bits about that, but generally good. Firstly it was nice to be able to knock out 20km relatively painlessly. Nice to remind yourself occasionally that despite feeling average, the fitness is mostly still there. It was also a very nice chance to catch up with somebody I haven't seen since my surfclub days. A chance meeting led to us jogging together for 30 minutes catching up. That worked well because it forced me to keep the first half of the run very low intensity which I might have struggled to do otherwise. My wise the run also seemed to go okay. Some moments of discomfort, but like the ride I had yesterday they were mostly during some moments of high heart rate stuff, so there could have been a few factors at play there.

So that is the downside bit. The run this morning, combined with the ride yesterday may be realise how much this cold has smacked me in the face. I like to keep telling myself that I am over it, but the reality that I am not quite yet. Looking at the last two sessions what can clearly be seen is that my heart rate is about 10bpm above where it should be for the work that I am doing in both sessions. The cold is a fairly easy explanation and lines up well with what I am feeling, which is mostly right, but not 100%. It sure has been a doozy this time around.

Sort of feels like it has been the year of the cold for me, with two big ones smacking me down this year. This year of having a professional licence has taught me many, many things. One of those things is the value of flexibility. Part of racing professionally, is the racing part. Doing it hard and doing it often. But when the body gives way, whether it be illness or injury, it tends to ruin even the best laid plans. This year has taught me very well the value of being able to roll with those punches. Okay, this plan hasn't worked, what is the next plan. Reset, regroup and re-aim, or something like that. I don't know how many times plans have changed this year. This latest one could quite possibly be the forth one. Just part of it and I have learnt that being able adjust to those changes with a minimum of stress is an important part of playing this game. This latest change could be an interesting one.

Just need to get the okay from the doctor tomorrow first...
