Working hard or hardly working

Today is officially my last Friday of work for 12 months. So fittingly I haven't actually been at work today. As I have mentioned in this blog a few times we get one Rostered Day Off a month, and today was mine. Today also happens to be the last Rostered Day Off I am going to get for 12 months too, but I will satisfy myself with having every Friday off instead. Soldier on.

The day off work has been a nice relaxing one. Just pottering around doing some admin tasks and family stuff like dropping my daughter off at school and going to play group with my son, stuff like that. Oh yeah and training, there has been some of that too.

Training today has been a swim this morning and will shortly include an easy spin on the bike.

The swim this morning was a good session, even if part of it involved seven shades of pain. The painful bit came at the end when we did 3 x 200m broken. The 200s were done as 100m, 10 seconds rest, 50m, 10 seconds rest, 50m. Flat out. By the last one, it hurt. A lot. Still I was quite happy with the times I was able to hold and the consistency of them too. It is good to do some gut buster stuff like that now and then just to remind you that you can. Did I mention it hurt though. Swim Smooth, tough but fair.

Conversely the ride this afternoon is an easy spin sort of affair and I really think it is going to be. I haven't jumped on the bike yet, but I suspect my legs are going to be feeling a little bit flat. Why do I think that? Well because my ride last night absolutely shattered me.

Interestingly my shattering didn't come about because the session was too difficult. I mean the session was solid, but I really just bonked. The ride was two hours which is about the limit of what I would usually do without some extra nutrition. But I guess coming at the end of a long day etc I just ran out of fuel early. About 20 minutes early to be exact. The session had been going very well. The S5 had been feeling wonderful (more on that in a sec), the efforts had gone fine and I was just looking forward to heading home when I physically fell in a hole. By the time I got home I was shaking and feeling light headed. I walked in the door and ate just about everything I could reach (that reminds, me where is that cat?). Feeling okay now, but the legs have been giving me hints that  that they are a little tired so we shall see.

So yeah back to the Cervelo S5. Last night was about the first proper ride I have had. No broken chain or skipping gears and up until my bonk it was singing. 'Quick as' I think is the scientific term. Easily 1.5km/h quicker than my old bike I suspect. Possibly more.  The only problem I have with the bike is that it was raining a little bit last night. That means that of the three rides I have had on the bike, two have been rained on. It makes me concerned that the bike may be some kind of rain magnet. It could possibly be carrying some kind of curse. Further testing will tell me for sure. Other than that though, awesome bike.

Speaking of awesome bikes, it isn't going to ride itself so I had better go and help out.
