Yes that is a reference to the movie the Princess Bride, which is a classic movie from my childhood. If you haven't watched it then you should stop whatever you are doing right now and do so.
Anyway moving on.
I suspect the Bureau of Meteorology and I work to different definitions of light winds. The forecast for yesterday afternoon was definitely for light winds. I would not describe the winds I saw when riding yesterday afternoon as light. Hardly cyclonic, but not a gentle breeze either.
My wife and I use a complicated wind strength classification system based on how many kite surfers we see out at Cottelsoe/Leighton's beach on the way home. I was riding, but she told me there was only one. A wind strength rating of 1 is not particularly high (it goes up to about 40 on our scale), so by that definition I guess you could say the winds were light. Perhaps this is the system that the Bureau uses too. Would certainly explain some things.
I still think it was wrong though.
Anyway, so the ride was windier than expected. All around tough in general really. It didn't feel that bad when I set out, but it was kind of warm and windy. I got to the end of my ride definitely feeling a little wrung out. I nearly got through two bottles in my 70 minute ride, which is quite a bit more than I usually would. Just a bit of a dry ride I think.
Running this morning went well. Certainly more pleasant conditions, with proper LIGHT winds, thank you very much. Perth has been very smokey and hazy again today (smoke from fires to the south), but thankfully that smoke wasn't around much when I was running. It was very smokey last Wednesday during swimming and we all felt it then, running in similar conditions would be far more unpleasant I suspect. Starting off the run I was feeling the ride a little, with the legs being a bit tired, but they warmed into it and I felt the efforts went well, nice and controlled at the start, a bit tougher at the end. It felt like a good solid run, which is exactly what I was hoping it would be.
Afternoon off today, which really just translates to an evening spent stretching. To be honest every evening is an evening spent stretching. But an afternoon with no training on a day when I have already run makes for an extra stretchy evening. Should be fun.
