The Scenic Route

Well it took me a while, but I made it back to Perth. I actually got back in yesterday afternoon, but after the day I had I wasn't up for a blog update. Or up for anything really. Why what happened, I hear you ask?

Well I am glad you asked.

Pull up a chair and prepare to hear my tale of woe.

Let us peel back the mists of time and turn our gaze all the way back to Sunday night. Well actually very early Monday morning if I am being entirely accurate, but I digress. I was in the middle of my solid post race slumber when I was awoken by my phone buzzing. Who could this be at such an ungodly hour I asked myself.

Turns out it was Virgin Airlines informing me that my flight out of the Gold Coast was delayed by two hours. 'Oh' I thought, but that will mean I will miss my connection to Perth. Not to fear, because quite promptly I got another message from Virgin Airlines saying that I had been booked on a later connecting flight to Perth. Hmmm, not ideal, it would mean I was getting home late and I would be stuck in Sydney Airport for many hours, but at least I was getting home. On the bright side it did mean I wouldn't have to get up at 3:00am to make my flight. With that in mind I rang the taxi company, made my pick up a couple of hours later and promptly went back to sleep.

All was going smoothly until I got to the airport. I was checking in when the girl behind the desk got a ominously confused look on her face. Turns out that the later flight that I had been booked on to had itself been cancelled (I kid you not). They could get me to Sydney, but they weren't sure what would happen to me there (neither was I). All they could tell me is that once I was there, the people at the airport should have a better idea of where I was supposed to go. Okaaaay...

With very few other options I went and got on my plane to Sydney.

Once I landed in Sydney my name was called over the plane's PA and I was asked to report to the staff at the end of the aero bridge. When I did so I was informed that I had been booked on to a plane to Melbourne which would then connect me to a plane to Perth. Oh and by the way the plane to Melbourne is leaving right now from that gate over there, off you go.

Phew I thought to myself, this should get me there, I have an hour in Melbourne to get from this flight to the connection to Perth. All should go smoothly. Well I would have had an hour if the flight from Melbourne didn't leave 30 minutes late.

Luckily they made up a bit of time on the flight and I landed in Melbourne with a whole 10 minutes to make my way across the terminal in order to board my flight to Perth. I managed to rock up at the gate just as they were opening it, so the timing actually worked fairly perfectly.

I made my way on to that flight and then a mere 4 hours later I was finally home.

Needless to say it was a long day.

Still I am home now and enjoying a bit of a rest week. I will be taking it easy training wise this week while I try and get my hip flexor sorted and regroup mentally a bit.

It is going to take me a couple of days longer than usual to get my race report up unfortunately, so bear with me please.
