However, the reality is that with heavy training it usually becomes necessary to train twice a day at least a few days a week. For those of us who work, training twice a day is normally going to require training in the afternoons.
Over the years I have worked out a few tricks to make training in the afternoons a bit easier, although it is still something I struggle with. The main aim of these trick is to make getting out the door easier, make it less of a struggle. The idea being that if it is easy, then you are more likely to do it. To do this, typically I try to build the program so that the afternoon sessions are ones I am more likely to do. Generally this means making these sessions shorter, easier ones, such as heading to the gym or going for a jog. By removing the barrier of training for a long time, or having to train hard, that makes it that little bit easier to get going.
Another thing I do is try and build the afternoon session into my day, such as going for a run on the way home from work, or heading to the gym before going home. Once again this is all about removing barriers. If I make it easy to fit the training session in, then I am more likely to do it.
Sometimes, however, getting out for an afternoon session really just requires you to stop thinking about it and simply getting on with it. That was the case today. Rather than internally debate back and forth on whether you should train or not, sometimes you just need to tell yourself to be quiet and then get out the door. I usually find that once I am training I am fine, it is just a case of getting myself going first, so that is sometimes what I aim for.
It doesn't always have to be pretty, sometimes it just needs to be.
