A nice day for coaching

Not a bad day on the coaching front. Today I had an athlete win a state title up at the Olympic Distance Championships in Darwin and another athlete run an unexpected 10km PB. Nice when you get those little messages. Reminds you what this coaching thing is all about.

While this weekend has some pleasant little surprises, it is looking ahead where things are really starting to get a bit exciting. As of today we are officially two weeks from the Cairns Half Ironman (and full Ironman for that matter). I have four athletes racing at Cairns, two of whom will then be getting ready to race at Ironman Austria a few weeks later. Fair to say it is a busy period with a lot going on.

I am pretty excited about Cairns because all the athletes heading there are pretty well prepared and ready to go. Heading into a race there are usually some niggles and other issues, but this is one event that there isn't too much of that (so far anyway), fingers crossed that lasts until race day. Baring events that are outside of my control, I feel the athletes have been prepared as they can be, which is a good feeling as a coach.

There is always apprehension before an event, and this one will be no different, but the athletes racing at Cairns have done the hard work, followed the program, had very high compliance and I am looking forward to seeing them get rewarded for that. Good results are never guaranteed, but you can create your own luck by training intelligently and consistently, which these athletes have done.

A couple of weeks of work left, then things are going to get pretty exciting.
