A Grind

I have written before that not ever session can be pretty. Such was the case today.

Not entirely sure what the issue was this morning. It might be a bit of fatigue left over from the weekend, it might be not quite getting enough sleep, it might just be that the body wasn't quite in it this morning, whatever the case, training the morning was a struggle. We got to the end and my training buddy looked up and simply said, well that was a grind and I couldn't agree more.

Still, a lesson that I have learnt over the years (and continue to learn now) is that sometimes a grind isn't a bad thing. Sometimes a grind is just what the body needs to get it to where it needs to be. There is no short cut to fitness and speed. No silver bullet or get fit quick scheme (not legal ones anyway). The trip to fitness and form is a long one that is paved with work. Sometimes the work is all inspirational sunrises and Rocky soundtracks, but more often that not it is early, dark, a bit windy and a grind. That doesn't sound like a bunch of fun, and quite frankly, sometimes it isn't

That is okay though because it is in that grind that the success lies. Sessions will be like that sometimes, you can't avoid it. You can minimise those sessions by making sure you are resting well, eating right, recovering properly, bringing the right focus and motivation to a session etc. But despite all that, some sessions will just be hard work and just a little bit unpleasant.

The upside to it all is that it is through those sessions that people obtain their goals. Sure you can choose to take the easy option on those days, stay in bed, sit out the hard days, elect to do an easier session, but for those that take those options too often, success will continue to elude them. If you listen to any sporting interview, ready any biography of a sporting legend there is always one common theme and it relates to the grind.

It might not be fun, but it is a necessary part of success. So for that reason a grind isn't always a bad thing.

Still it would be nice if tomorrow's session was a bit nicer.
