Chalk and Cheese

Running and coaching today. One of those things went well.

I hit my run today is a pretty frustrated frame of mind. I was all set to get away from work and get in a 40 minute run before coaching, however, just as I was about to leave I got caught up. 15 minutes later I was out the door but it felt like I had lost enough time to throw my running plans completely out the window. Grrrrr.

As is often the case it turned out to not be quite so bad. In the end I managed to fit in a 27 minute run and while it wasn't as much as I had planned, it turns out that it was probably about as much run as I had legs for today. Once I got running I felt pretty flat and I found that I ran out of legs quite a bit earlier than I expected. I had a hard session this morning and this afternoon was quite warm and sweaty and so I suspect those those factors played a part. The short run certainly didn't end up being such a big deal though. Sometimes it is worth remembering that we need to remain flexible with our training. A plan and routine is ideal, but when life doesn't let those things happen (as if often the case), then it isn't always a disaster. I need to remember that more.

The second part of the afternoon was the coaching and this bit went a lot more smoothly. Today we had 1km threshold repeats, the type of session that is an oldie but a goldie. The amount of repeats that people were doing depended on their speed and whether or not they were racing this weekend. Most of the squad is racing and so they had a short and sharp session, just to get their legs in the mood. For the others the session was longer, 6 x 1km for most of them. It is the sort of session that hurts a fair bit but usually leaves a smile on the face of most and so it was tonight. Something very satisfying about nailing 1km intervals.

Two rather different experiences, but all up a very satisfying afternoon of triathloning.
