Little by little

Very satisfying bit of training in the last 24 hours. First a run last night and then a swim this morning, neither felt great but both went well, which just goes to show you never know sometimes.

After a great week of training last week during the festive period, this week the training has been a bit more hit and miss as I have adjusted to being back at work. As I wrote about on Wednesday, I stayed in bed that morning, and while the training yesterday and today has been good, it has been a bit of a struggle motivationally. I know from experience that if I stick with it and keep getting myself out the door it will come good, but up until that point it might be a bit of hard work. Just got to stick with it.

After being back at work for three days, I would hardly say I have settled back into routine (it is amazing how quickly you get out of routine), but I think I am well on my way. I suspect my mid next week it will be like I never left.

With regard to the exercise I am particularly happy with how the run went last night. 9km in 40 minutes, which is going pretty well for me. After the run I did with some mates a few weeks ago I have had a bit more drive to run a bit further and last night was the latest bit of that. I woke up pretty sore this morning, but that is perhaps not surprising as last night's run was the quickest I have done for a while. Looking forward to doing more, although I might not get the chance again this week.

On the coaching side of thing I have a bit of a quieter weekend coming up which will be nice. I had an athlete appointment this morning and will catch up with a few of my out of town athletes on the phone, but other than that the formal coaching will be limited to just a few program updates. Coaching is ticking along at a pretty happy burble at the moment, which as I said in my 2019 post a few days ago suits me just fine. One of things I think I learnt in my first season of coaching in 2107/2018 is what balance of athletes is right for me and it is something I intend to keep putting into practise through 2019. About 10 seems to be my maximum number, meaning that I can give them the attention they deserve while still doing my day job and spending at least some time seeing my family.

Speaking of which, I think it might be time I went and saw them. Pizza and cheese night coming up...
