Awards

A little bit of a Christmas Party tonight, another one. Last one for the year I think.

This latest Christmas Party is for the Front Runner squad, so it should be a bit of fun. In previous years we have had it as a local restaurant, but the squad has grown so large that we won't fit any longer, so tonight will be a BBQ affair at a local park. To be honest I am looking forward to the more relaxed atmosphere.

Each year at this function the coaches give awards to the athletes that they think have best epitomized the Front Runner ideals, dedication, a consistent approach to training, a team approach and a community spirit. Given the quality of the athletes we train at Front Runner it can be pretty hard to pick just one athlete.

This year for me the choice wasn't actually that hard. I have had a number of great athletes over the season, but one of my athletes in particular has stood out. I train a guy Jarrad and he is exactly the sort of athlete that coaches love. He is hard working and dedicated, trains with genuine intent and will. If he has a query or a question it is always with the view to improve his training, never looking for an excuse. Coaching him for the past year and a bit has been a pleasure.

We see time and time again that the athletes who have the best attitudes towards training are often the ones who have the most success and Jarrad is no different. Some might call it making their own luck, I like to think of it as reaping the rewards of hard work. Due to his great attitude and approach to training Jarrad has a truly impressive list of accomplishments for this year. They include:

  • a 5km PB
  • a 10km PB
  • a malf marathon PB
  • a marathon PB (narrowly missing breaking 3 hours)
  • a Olympic Distance PB
  • a Half Ironman PB.
A pretty successful season no matter how you view it and one that was entirely well earned.
