Adapting

Sorry, no post yesterday, my bad. Yesterday was a solidly long day and I just didn't quite get to the blog. Back now though.

On Monday I mentioned that I was hoping to get in a really solid week of training in a build for a race I have in about 10 days. Nice plan. Funny just how quickly plans can go out the window...

That is a bit unfair really, this week has hardly been a bust, but I am a real sucker for a plan and nothing bugs me quite as much as a plan not coming together. So far, this week has not gone to plan.

Training all went smoothly on Monday, no problems there, looking good. Tuesday morning, yep still ticking along on schedule. It wasn't until Tuesday afternoon that the plan started looking shaky. Yesterday the plan had been to go running in the afternoon, but instead I was at work until very late and by the time I got home all I really wanted to do was sit on the couch and rock quietly. Which I did.

Not to worry, back on the horse this morning and get on with it. Nope, not quite. This morning we had one of those freak Summer storms (yes I know it isn't Summer yet), which are all thunder and lightning. Tip for new players, two things you don't want to do in a electrical storm, be swimming, or paddling on a river. Unfortunately I was about 10 minutes into my morning paddle when I realised just how much lightning there was around. I am usually pretty risk tolerant, but when there is a big FLASH, BANG, right in front of you it gets hard to ignore facts. As good sense would suggest I beat a hasty retreat back to the beach and decided what to do next.

As it was still pretty early I decided I would head out for the run that I didn't get to on Tuesday night. Might as well make the most of it after all.

Turned out that the run was actually pretty good, although it was a bit damp. I managed to get in 60 minutes of running, which is more than I have done for a while, so that was a bit of a win, but it was frustrating that it was necessary to modify the plans at all.

In the end I guess the moral of this story is that when it comes to training flexibility is key. Consistency is very important when it comes to training and making improvements, but sometimes the best way to be consistent is to roll with the punches and fit in training when and where it can. In a perfect world we would always be able to train when, where and how we wanted. But we don't live in a perfect world and so sometimes we have to accept the unexpected, adapt, adjust and if necessary compromise and then get back on with things.

That's the plan tomorrow. Fingers crossed.
