Talking about the Weather

Off to the track in a moment, as soon as I finish typing this in fact.

As I type this I am sitting here looking out my window at a very dark grey cloud, I suspect it is currently raining, perhaps even a bit of hail. The cloud doesn't look that big, but I suspect we are in for an evening of intermittent showers. The big question for me right now is just who will turn up for training.

I put a post up earlier today on the running group's Facebook page saying that champions all have one thing in common, they get the training done, no matter what. I will be interested to see if that little message is enough to get some people to the track tonight. I am about to find out.

While my message to the group is a bit of a cliche, it doesn't make it any less true. In this running group there are a mix of triathletes either working on their base in preparation for the season, or people getting ready for the Perth City to Surf in a couple of week's time. Whatever they are working towards though the fact that doing the work consistently now will pay dividends later holds true for all of them, even if doing the work is a bit cold and wet and horrible. I suspect they all know that deep down, but we will see if that is enough to get them out for what could be a bit of a damp run this evening.

For myself this morning training did end up being on the trainer like I suspected last night. The weather this morning was truly horrid and while getting the training consistently done is crucial, it doesn't mean walking out into dangerous conditions which is what it would have been on the road or the river this morning. The session ended up being a good one so I was pretty happy that I went with the indoor option. A good chance to turn a horrible morning into a very constructive bit of training.

Being on the trainer this morning makes two rides for the week (something that is a bit unusual these days). Plus, I actually have a group ride planned on Saturday, so I should end up with three rides ticked off for this week. Unheard of. I have been neglecting my riding for quite some time now and so as you would expect the power output is right down, however, other than the power, the riding is feeling fairly okay. This weekend will be a bit of a test with the plan to do around 50km or so. Not a particularly long ride by any standards, but longer than I have done for a while. I am not worried about it, but I will be interested to see whether I struggle or not. I hope not.

I haven't really had a burning desire to get out and do long rides recently. In fact it is not something I am particularly missing, even though I loved those rides while I was training. It is the time away from the family that makes it hard I think, the idea of heading out the door for 5 hours on the bike makes me cringe at the moment. Anyway, as the weather continues to improve I might find myself out on the bike a bit more like I have this week, I am not sure. I don't think it is something I will actively pursue, but sometimes rides have a funny way of sneaking up on you, like they have this week.  Certainly no plans to get out and ride for 5 hours, but this week has been reminding me that I do love cycling, so I think I might just wait and see what Spring brings.

Now, time to see who has turned up down at the track.
