Rain tomorrow

Coaching on the cards for me tomorrow, spending the morning out on the bike with the squad from Front Runner.

Similar to the track session that I took last Thursday, it will be interesting to see just how many people turn up to the bike tomorrow. The Front Runner crew are usually pretty tough, but in my experience once it gets wet on the bike we often find the numbers mysteriously dwindling. I have just put a "up and at them" message on the Front Runner message board, so hopefully that gets people out the door, but we will wait and see. If I get down there and there is only one person riding then it unfortunately won't be the first time.

I have written numerous times about things you can do to make riding in the rain more pleasant, manageable and safer so I won't rehash that material. Probably sufficient to say that if handled correctly rain doesn't need to be a barrier to cycling, unless safety is in question of course.

What I will re-iterate is the importance of getting the training in though. Once again I feel like a bit of a broken record here, but if you have a training goal in mind, then skipping session because the weather is unpleasant will not get you to that goal any time soon.

If you look across all disciplines, whether it be in the sporting world or the professional one, the people who succeed are the ones who do the work, consistently. There are always exceptions to this rule, but on the whole that is how it is done. It may look like some people are cruising along on luck or talent, but almost certainly, if you dig into these individuals you would find that they are also working pretty darn hard.

It simply staggers me the number of people who don't understand the above, who never learn it. The people who hear rain and simply roll over and go back to sleep. If you want something then be prepared to spend the time practising and learning and improving and be prepared that you may be doing so for years before you get close to your goals. If you aren't willing to accept the work, then you better be willing to accept mediocrity instead, because that will be the outcome.

There are no shortcuts or silver bullets for success.
