Yesterday I was wondering how my ride session would go this morning as there was a fair bit of rain forecast overnight. Well that rain did turn up, but despite that we didn't have a bad ride, with not entirely unpleasant conditions greeting us.
My bit of emotional blackmail on social media to members of the Front Runner triathlon team seemed to have a bit of an impact too, with half a dozen of them making it down to training to make the most of the morning.
Half a dozen may not seem like many, but last time it rained like this before training I had one person turn up, so I will take small victories where I can.
As is so often the way, despite the rain beforehand, the actual session was reasonably pleasant. I think we got some light showers and of course the roads where wet, which translated to wet backsides for most people, but the temperatures were mild and we had no big storms. Those that made the effort to come out were justly rewarded with a good, hard ride. Wins for everyone.
For myself I found my legs were lacking just a bit of spark this morning. I wasn't trying to do the threshold efforts that the others were doing, however, riding and trying to keep up with the group to provide some coaching usually means working pretty hard anyway. I just found this morning that I was missing that little extra 10%. I completely blame the lack of spark on the long ride I had on Saturday. I felt like I pulled up from Saturday's 75km ride pretty well, however, upon reflection this morning the legs were missing a bit of go. Not all that surprising I haven't had a whole bunch of riding in the last little while, so 75km was a bit of a shock to the system.
Despite the lack of sparkle this morning I have been noticing that riding has been improving over the past few weeks. The average power I am generating in these sessions has regained around 10W or so which is nice. Nowhere near what I used to ride at, but it is always encouraging to feel like things are on the upswing. I have no plans in the immediate future to hit cycling hard, so that improvement may falter, but I am happy to take what comes my way at this stage.
Cycling is always enjoyable and having it feel good only makes it more so.
