After a rather glorious weekend away down at Margaret River I am back on deck ready to get back into the coaching life.
The weekend down south really was rather special and just what we were after. After a bit of a rainy day on Friday, we had two days of absolutely perfect Spring weather, mild temperatures, blue skies, light winds. It was pretty close to perfect.
We had a great weekend of family time too, having some truly amazing experiences which will hopefully stick with the kids for the rest of their lives. One of the best of those experiences was on Saturday when we went on a whale watching tour out of Busselton on Geographe Bay. We went on the tour not really sure what to expect, but it ended up being breathtaking.
Geographe Bay is full of whales at this time of year as they migrate north towards Broome in northern Australia, so this time of year is peak whale watching season. We went out on a tour hoping to get a glimpse of some of these amazing creatures, but what we actually got was so much better. The tour operator found whales quite easily and we proceeded to follow a pod at a respectful distance for some time, which was pretty cool. But then, after a while two of the whales turned and came back to the boat, proceeding to swim around the boat checking it out for around 40 minutes.
The boat isn't allowed to move when the whales are that close and so we ended up being 'stuck' there while the whales took their time checking us out, at times coming right up to the boat. I feel silly saying over and over how amazing it was, but words really can't explain how special it was being so close to these giant humpbacks. Even if the kids don't remember it, it was an experience that my wife and I will remember for the rest of our days.
While the whales were the highlight, it certainly wasn't the only good part of the weekend. We had loads of fun exploring forests in the 4WD, climbing rocks, eating ice cream and just generally having some quality family time.
We are exhausted now though, and so it is probably a good thing that we are back home.
Now that we are back home it is time to get back to the world of Triathlon and the routine of coaching, starting tomorrow. Tomorrow it is out to Nedlands for the Front Runner Tuesday Threshold bike session. Should be a good one.
