Not the Grind

Simple pleasures today, one of the simplest in fact. The simple pleasure that is not being at work.

Today was a public holiday in Perth. It may have been a public holiday elsewhere, I am not really sure, but what I do know is that it was definitely a day off in Perth.

This September public holiday is always something a little bit special. It breaks the public holiday drought that is Winter. I am not sure how it is elsewhere, but in Western Australia you get inundated with public holidays in the first half of the year. You get positively spoiled by the endless orgy of free time that is the Easter and Anzac Day double and then, poof, that's it, barely anything for months. Nothing until you get to the end of September and then, finally, you get another public holiday. That happy day was today.

As public holidays go, our one today was fairly quiet. We had briefly entertained grand ideas of going to the Perth Royal Show, but then when push came to shove we realised that we really didn't want to, so we didn't. Besides our innate slackness, our apathy towards the Show wasn't helped by the weather which could be generously described as 'exceedingly damp' this morning. Just the sort of morning for sitting around inside playing board games, which is exactly what we did.

For a public holiday that would be called quiet by some and dull by others, it was actually a rather satisfying one. I had plans of doing a bit of exercise, but the unceasing rain in the morning dampened my enthusiasm for that, and by the time it cleared in the afternoon I was doing other things. Those other things included going out for lunch with my parents, walking the dog, fixing my kids' billy cart as well as a few others. What the other things didn't include was any coaching, which was kind of a nice break.

Nothing that I did today was particularly earth shattering in either significance or excitement, but they were fulfilling things that gave a sense of accomplishment to the day. Sometimes those days are just what you need, and so it was today.

Back to the grind tomorrow, but not quiet yet. Today there is still a little bit more relaxing to be getting on with.
