A good character building session with the Front Runner triathlon team this morning.
The session was character building for a couple of reasons.
The first of the reasons was the weather. The weather today alternated between mostly fine and gale forced hail, never a particularly fun combo. Just as people started getting nice and warm and sweaty the rain and wind would sweep in dropping the temperature and making everyone shiver. That is to say nothing about roads instantly becoming wet and treacherous. Tough stuff.
The second reason that the session was character building was because the session was just plain tough. Between 75 and 90 minutes of solid brick work over hills and sandy trails. The brick was made up of a 2km run/12km ride/2km run/12km run/2km run. A pretty solid morning no matter how you approach it.
Still, to the credit of the 10 people who braved the conditions and made it down, they all toughed it out and executed the session well.
The message of the day was that by getting down to the session and doing the work, they had already beaten everyone who stayed in bed.
People often wonder what they need to do to get quicker in triathlon, what is the trick, tell me the silver bullet. Well, the truth is that there is no silver bullet, the trick is that there is no trick. Getting out the door and training intelligently and consistently is the only trick there is. The folks who made it to the session this morning and worked through it, despite the conditions, discovered that trick for themselves today.
