Here we are, we have made it to Darwin.
Today has gone pretty much as hoped, an early morning, a drive to the airport and a fairly smooth 4 hour flight to Darwin. We got to Darwin mid afternoon today and since then we have been busy trying to remember how to relax.
The other day my wife and I realised that this is the first non race related trip we have been on in about 7 years. In that time we have been on plenty of trips but those trips have always been for a reason (typically a race or work) and so the trips have always been super busy.
In contrast this trip is not for any real reason other than visiting Darwin and catching up with my parents. As such the trip is a pretty low key one where we have plenty of time for relaxing. All my wife and I have to do now is remember how to relax.
Sounds strange I know, and I am definitely exaggerating a little for dramatic effect, but as busy parents we don't often just sit back and do nothing. Since arriving in Darwin both my wife and I have realised that we are a little out of practice at simply doing nothing. Since arriving I have been fighting down the urge that I need to be doing something, but the truth is that I really don't need to be.
Obviously we aren't going to spend all our time in Darwin doing absolutely nothing, we are planning on getting out and about and having some fun, but these are things that we want to do, rather than 'need' to do.
This is all perhaps a sad indictment on the lives that we drive ourselves to live in modern society, the fact that we have to actively try and relax. I have always been quite proud of how much I manage to cram into life and I am not sure I regret any of that. However, it is perhaps a good reminder that in the hubbub of life I should try and take a few more moments to step back and smell the roses.
Now that we are here, we are all looking forward to taking some time to relax, catch up with friends and family and get out and see some of this town that we used to call home. I might even get some exercise in while I am here. No promises though.
