Day 1 in Darwin has been a flat out one. I am currently a shattered member of an exhausted family.
So far the day has included:
- a 60 minute run to start the day;
- several hours exploring a crocodile park; and
- a couple of hours catching up with coach extraordinaire Daryl Stanley.
No wonder we are all tired.
The run and the crocodile park were both a lot of fun. The run wasn't as painful as it could have been and the crocodile park was more so.
It is the dry season up on Darwin at the moment which means the weather is slightly less brutal than normal. The kinder weather means that running isn't quite as painful as it can be during the Wet. I still had to watch my heart rate during the run, but I found that I got through the hour reasonably well.
The crocodile park part of the day was the usual tourist trap sort of affair. It is not the sort of place we would usually go during peak tourist season, but our daughter has cherished memories of the place and so a visit needed to be done. In the end a lot of fun was had by all, but neither my wife nor I are sorry that it is over and done with.
The real highlight of the day was the catch up with Daryl and Robyn Stanley. A couple of hours just having a chat about the world of triathlon, some of the finer points of coaching and just life in general. It was great to see them both again, it really feels like no time at all since we last caught up, even though it has been considerably longer than that. We should get a chance to see them a couple more times while we are up here which will be awesome.
On top of a providing us with a couple of hours of quality chatting, Daryl also provided me with a bike to use for the week we are up here, which is exactly what I plan on doing tomorrow. I may even brave one of Darwin's cycling groups, which is something that I haven't done for about 6 years. I have been told that cycling is enjoying a real resurgence in Darwin at the moment, so I am keen to see it first hand. Hopefully I survive the experience.
Besides going for a ride in the morning, we have a fairly quiet day planned, which I think everyone is the family unit is in need of.
